Beltane and Burgers

Time to put out the fire and let the Beltane flames fly high! Crown the Summer King and caper with the Green Man. Time to pasture the animals and face toward summer. Admire the blooms, consider the blossoms and watch the bursting buds. Put away the cold and welcome in the warm. The long and lazy Easter weekend is past: now is the time to fly and look to the sky; for the martins and swifts are coming home to start their aerial ballet over the fields.

The eggs were found, the bunny was chased and I observed it all from above, wanting to join in but tethered to these walls. Now I am waiting for the festival of fire and watching to see how many of you remember to look to the past before turning once again to your future. Bring me a flower and I will dance. Watch the petals as they move with the change in the air as I remember the dance of the men with the tight britches, bells, scarves and sticks.

Beltane brings burgers made from local meat and beer through breweries in Norfolk. Wednesday feasts for the frugal with time to whisper to loved ones as the sun continues to lengthen the shadows until they reach the velvet serenity of darkness. Return to my Dragon and linger within his walls when night sends her chill and silver light to try to chase you home.

Mischief, Roguery and Chocolate

I am feeling mischievous. The frost keeps creeping over the grass and is cheating you into thinking that it is colder than it is. Fires are lit but are then allowed to smoulder out, which does ruin some of my fun but instead I get to hear the birds and feel the breeze follow you in through the door. I chase it around the room until it blows itself out and then race back to the door for the next gust.

I can smell the Spring now: it’s fighting its way back from the dark corners and hidden cobwebs of Winter. The wind has shaken the last of the clinging beach leaves from their reaching fingers, freeing the limbs to renew their growth. A covering of green luminescence is starting to take over the trees like an explosion bubbling and bursting from broad winter buds to greet the blaze of blue reflected from the sky into the bells below.

The kitchen is starting to fill with smells of young shoots, sprouts and greens to make your skin glow. Easter Sunday lunch is a promise of Wellingtons with egg gilded, golden pastry or roasted celeriac to tempt even the most dedicated of carnivores. The Bunny is ready and thankful that this is not the time for her to be caught, stewed and basted; instead to be worshipped and followed for her assurance of silver wrapped treats to sparkle and melt in the sun with the promise of new life exploding from the earth.

Come to my Dragon, eat my food, imbibe with me and let your children run with the Bunny and leave with chocolate.

Blossom, Eggs and Spooks

From my window I can see the snowdrops have passed, the daffodils are fading and the May is in blossom, although it’s still April. Easter is creeping closer and I am starting to think about eggs. Blue eggs, yellow eggs, pink eggs and every painted colour I can make. I can’t hide them outside anymore but I have help. Spring, eggs and bunnies with a mixture of chocolate and glistening wrapping is coming back to my Dragon.

The sound of hooves has been replaced and evolved but I will be listening for giggles and gravel. Come to my home, I’ll be hiding, keeping still and quiet although you can try to see me peeping from behind the curtains, find the hidden eggs and meet the Easter Bunny. Easter Sunday Lunch followed by chocolate eggs. Celebrate Spring and life with us. I promise I’ll celebrate with you even though I am long gone.

Ghostly Curries

You might see me out of the corner of your eye, or notice when the lights start flickering, sometimes I play with the fires and they won’t light or they will belch out smoke. I’m not sure why I’m still around but you all interest me. The smells from the kitchen tantalise me, the laughter of families frees me, the closeness of couples comforts me, the flickering of fires reminds me of life and the welcome is always genuine. Last weekend you made me feel comfortable in my home again when all the lights went out and there was music, laughter, fire and candle light. Then love and joy took over when Mothers’ Day arrived.

This month I will be learning about curry. Not something that we used to offer as a coaching inn but the colours and smells are enticing me to settle in the kitchen for a while. Watch where you leave your pots because it’s fun for me to move them!
